PROJECT
Hostile Vehicle Mitigation – King George Square
King George Square is a prominent public precinct located in the heart of Brisbane City, which hosts a variety of events and activities and is home to the iconic Brisbane City Hall. King George Square is one of the busiest locations in the Brisbane CBD. With an average of 20,000 daily visitors it is a popular gathering place for locals and international tourists all year round.
In 2017 Create Security was proud to be engaged by the Brisbane City Council to assist with the development and implementation of the safety and security upgrade for King George Square. This was the Council’s first major investment in CBD security to mitigate against hostile vehicle attacks in public spaces.
The project involved the installation of more than 70 permanent PAS 68 impact rated bollards to provide maximum protection for King George Square. Installation was completed in a staged process, enabling all temporary concrete blocks along Ann and Adelaide Street entry points to be removed.
A combination of both static and retractable bollards were installed on site as part of the security upgrade. The bollards have been strategically but aesthetically incorporated into the public precinct to provide the highest level of protection whilst still keeping the functionality of the space by allowing pedestrians to move freely around the Square. The retractable bollards have been positioned to provide access points for authorised vehicles to enter and exit the Square and City Hall for events and activities. The overall design is both functional and establishes a safe pedestrian zone in the event of an attempted hostile vehicle attack.
Create Security played an integral part in the project, advising, supplying, certifying and commissioning the bollards and integrating the HVM system. Our experience, skill and in-house expertise enabled us to seamlessly deliver a security solution to safeguard the public and the many events hosted at King George Square and Brisbane City Hall.
Our role continues as we provide on-going service and maintenance on the bollards.
